Tom’s Been in the development industry for over 30 years, and since the founding of For Impact | The Suddes Group, has been involved in over 300 campaigns and raised over $1 Billion on behalf of ‘non-profit’ organizations.
From this experience, there remains three universal truths for all organizations. These can be summarized on a napkin:
1. Stop defining yourself in the negative. Instead, focus on what you are for: (your) Impact.
2. Impact Drives Income
3. Just Ask.
1. Describe your organization?
2. Write down the first Napkin Insight:
3. What impact do you (your organization) make on the world/your world?
4. Is there a difference between your answers to questions 1. and 3.?
5. Write down an experience of when someone was personally impacted by your organization.
6. Write down the second Napkin Insight:
7. We’re not in the _____________ business, we’re in the _________________ business.
If we clearly, concisely, communicate our _____________, our income will_____________.
8. Write down the third Napkin Insight:
9. Sit down with a co-worker, volunteer, or friend of the organization.
Share how you (your organization) impacts others.
Share the story you wrote down for question 5. with them.
Ask them how they became involved with your organization.
Do they have any favorite memories or stories?
Write down your impressions, thoughts, and feelings about this conversation. What went well?
Was anything awkward or uncomfortable?

When you have that, you can drive the bus anywhere. Now, I realize this is easier said than done, but trust me, when someone’s on the wrong bus… they know it.
