Day 57: Deadlines

Tom Suddes | March 15, 2010

B2A FOR IMPACT TRAINING

One last thought from THE SPARK.

In a conversation about vision and ideas, the conversation ended with this question:

“So how do you turn these random ideas into an act?”

This was the great answer.

“DEADLINES.”

“Of course, they always come too fast. But, without them, your mind is not focused.”

Frank responded, “Most people hate deadlines. It hadn’t occurred to me that limitations could be a good thing.”

Three quick thoughts for the day:

  1. If you have GOALS… you need DEADLINES! They can be artificial (this100-Day Challenge) or they can be actual (a Festival or a Performance). WRITE IT DOWN. IT WILL HAPPEN.
  2. CONSTRAINTS ARE GOOD. Anybody can achieve any goal… if there are no CONSTRAINTS! (Unlimited budget. Unlimited access to talent. Unlimited space or performance venues. Etc.) Real creativity comes from working within CONSTRAINTS.
  3. THE TICKET IS PRINTED. I’m assuming all of you Irish folks have heard of Disney, Disneyland, Disney World, etc.

When they are opening up a new Park and a specific brand new ride… they tell everyone involved (the designers, the contractors, the cast members, etc.) that THE TICKET IS PRINTED. That means that there is a date (DEADLINE!) printed on the ticket. There will be a bunch of little kids and their parents standing in line on that date! We will have the ride ready to go.

Challenge for the Day: Treat your fundraising and development and revenue goals in the same way. Think about deadlines and constraints/creativity and THE TICKET IS PRINTED. (If you don’t, where is the money? You will not be able to put on the ‘PERFORMANCE’.)
