Day 53: Connecting & Comfort Zones

Tom Suddes | March 11, 2010

B2A FOR IMPACT TRAINING

I’m still fascinated by all of the wonderful ‘stuff’ in THE SPARK and the whole idea of Cirque du Soleil as a wonderful example of a world class ‘arts organizations’/ performance/theater.

There’s a great story early on in the book about bringing in all of these world class athletes and making them climb a rope and then sing a song! Almost all of the two dozen candidates who were trying to work for Cirque du Soleil were taken aback by this suggestion. (“You’re not serious?”) The Cirque du Soleil trainer explained it this way:

“Most of the people are athletes. They’re used to following rules and doing what they are told. They have to learn to GET OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONES to try something different and express themselves.”

“The need to learn to CONNECT with people in new ways. For us (Cirque du Soleil) that is at the heart at what our shows are all about – CONNECTING.”

Some interesting thoughts and lessons. At the very least, I would encourage everybody who is part of this Business to Arts experiment to continue to learn to CONNECT with people in new ways!

And, the CHALLENGE FOR THE DAY is to

GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE!!!

P.S. I hope she won’t mind me sharing this, but I got a terrific email from Cliona Donnelly at the Abbey. I won’t repeat all of it but here are some excerpts that should encourage and motivate all of you.

  • “Visited with someone this morning who commented on my passion for the Abbey so I’m delighted it’s coming through in what I’m saying.” (Tied to yesterday’s challenge on PASSION.)
  • “I arranged the visits so I could practice my message and get feedback on our visuals.” (TJS: YES!)
  • “It turned out to be a fantastic meeting. He has brilliant contacts, etc., etc. Definitely a potential champion and even a potential mentor.”
  • “HE LOVED THE SIMPLICITY of our message and the visual tool… and took a copy of it with him to show clients as an example of a ‘PERFECT MESSAGE’!” (TJS: WOW.)

Cliona went to talk about a meeting she has coming up with a large consulting accounting firm and a smaller IT firm in the next couple of days.

What I love the most is that these young ladies at the Abbey are out… they’re practicing… they’re visiting… and they are making ‘stuff’ happen!!!
